Case Studies from the Field

Zimbabwe

Community EarlyAct Reduces El Niño Losses by 60%

Villages participating in SACCN's EarlyAct programme in Masvingo province mobilized anticipatory action 3 weeks before the 2024 drought peak — moving livestock, pre-positioning food stocks, and activating community support networks. Participating households reported 60% lower crop and livestock losses compared to non-participating villages.

Mozambique

Solar Milling Cooperative Cuts Post-Harvest Loss by 45%

A women-led solar milling cooperative in Sofala province, supported through SACCN's JustEnergy programme, has transformed food security for 340 farming families. The solar-powered facility processes maize, sorghum, and indigenous grains — eliminating dependence on diesel transport to distant mills and cutting post-harvest losses by nearly half.

Indigenous Seed Bank Preserves 180 Traditional Varieties

A community seed bank in Eastern Province, established through SeedForward, now preserves 180 indigenous crop varieties including drought-tolerant sorghum, cowpea, and groundnut cultivars. Managed entirely by local women farmers, the bank has distributed 4,200 seed packages to families rebuilding after consecutive drought seasons.
